From the Main Stage to the Global Stage to stages dedicated to startups and apps, we built a platform for attendees to hear from all aspects of the mobile industry. Attendees were able to learn from mobile-industry leading companies and thought leaders.

Some of the highlights include Vaughan Smith, Facebook’s VP of Mobile, as he revealed the social networking site’s new focus on product development and takes on “mobile-first efforts”.

John Riccitiello, CEO of EA, focused on the potential that mobile now provides for gaming and debuted new racing games that will be released by EA on its mobile platforms later this month on our Main Stage.

Lei Jun, CEO of Xiaomi, chatted with Yuri Milner, Founder of DST Global, on our Main Stage about his disruption of the traditional hardware manufacturing industry by integrating hardware, software and internet all in the Xiaomi phone.

10 country specific sessions on our Global Stage

40 speakers from 10 different panels on the Global Stage provided specific perspectives from some of the top trending mobile markets around the world including Brazil, India, China, Japan, EU, the Middle East and others.

Opening with a keynote by Francisco Varela “YouTube and the Evolution of Mobile Video”, the Global Stage covered all the major emerging markets for mobile and had an amazing two days of speakers and energetic dialogue with audiences.

From Bay Brazil‘s panel discussion, Jay Sullivan, VP of Products for Mozilla, highlighted Mozilla’s plans to release their first smartphone in Brazil and debuted a prototype of the phone on our Global Stage.

100 apps from 14 countries competing in appAttack

From the Top 100 mobile apps chosen to compete in appAttack, Waigo Translate from the U.S. was declared the winner of our global competition on Day 2.  Waigo is an ideal companion for travel to China as it provides an instant Chinese translation of any restaurant menu via your iPhone.  Never order the wrong food again!

Waigo Translate received $5000 USD from StartMeApp, $10000 USD in credit from appsfire, and a Nexus 7 tablet from Google admob.

20 competing startups from 10 countries in G-Startup

Beginning with over 120 applications from 24 countries, G-Startup narrowed down the pool of startups competing at GMIC SV to the Top 20 on Day 1.  These competitors were split between two categories, with 10 finalists each in the Seed Stage and Growth Stage phases.

Day 2 kicked off on our Main Stage with the announcement of the G-Startup winners.  These startups were given the chance to pitch for 5-7 minutes on the Main Stage, and an opportunity to join a leading incubation program in the Valley.

G-Startup Seed Stage Winner: Disherence. Disherence is an early-stage company from Russia and shows you the best dishes in any restaurant.

G-Startup Growth Stage Winner: Scandit. The growth stage company from Switzerland provides a best-in-class barcode scanning technology, product data, and analytics services.

Networking Events:
Networking events included GMIC Night where we had Miss Silicon Valley, a fashion show and a dance contest for attendees to enjoy over complimentary beer.

GMIC SV then ended with a bang at our After Party, hosted at Studio 8 in downtown San Jose, where attendees were able to relax and network over a night of drinks and dancing.

Project Lead / Corporate Entrepreneur, Qualcomm Labs

Mike Bailey is a project lead and corporate entrepreneur at Qualcomm Labs, Qualcomm Inc.’s internal incubator focused on addressing new market and product opportunities. In this role, Bailey leads business development for Qualcomm’s “Context Awareness” projects and oversees relationships with major brands and advertising agencies on the implementation of mobile-based marketing.
Previously, Bailey was vice president of Programming for FLO TV at Qualcomm and led the programming strategy and execution for the Company’s $800M investment in FLO TV. He headed the creation of the very first mobile broadcast service which included content from major networks and also helped to secure distribution with carriers.
Prior to joining Qualcomm, Bailey worked for Entriq, Inc., as senior vice president of Business Development, as well as Motorola as vice president of Business Development.
Bailey holds a B.A. degree in Telecommunications & Film from San Diego State University and an MBA from University of San Diego.

Company: Groupon

David Katz, VP/GM of Consumer Mobile at Groupon, is the global leader of the company’s mobile business. David has been a leader on Groupon’s product team since joining the Palo Alto office in April 2011 as the VP/GM of Retail Solutions. During that time, he led the acquisition of OpenCal and the national launch of Groupon Scheduler, an appointment scheduling solution for small businesses. David shifted back to mobile in July 2012, returning to his roots as a mobile business leader.

Prior to Groupon, David worked across the mobile business at Yahoo!, serving  first as corporate development and strategy lead, later as VP of Mobile Advertising and, beginning in 2009, as VP of Mobile for North America.

Before joining Yahoo, David spent four and a half years with McKinsey & Company as a consultant in the San Francisco office and a member of the Technology, Telecom and Media (TTM) practice. At McKinsey, David served clients in a variety of technology areas including mobile, interactive TV and enterprise software. David has also been active in public affairs and has had roles in four US Presidential campaigns.

David received both a BA and MBA from the University of California, Berkeley. He currently lives in San Francisco, CA with his wife Amy Wertheimer, a psychologist in private practice.

Company: SINA Mobile

Stuart Q. Xu is the Business Development Director at SINA Mobile with responsibility for SINA Mobile’s overseas marketing, cooperations, and investment in the U.S. Prior to joining SINA Mobile, Stuart Q. Xu worked for SOHU as a business specialist at Wireless Department and a sales strategist at Sales Department successively. He also served as SOHU’s Chief Representative North America after he moved to Boston in 2010.

Company: Google Inc. 

Tuyen focuses on publisher acquisition and development strategy for the global mobile market. She also has 6 years of advertising experience, working with Fortune 500 Tech B2B companies. Mostly, she is dreaming of her next meal.

Company: Apigee

Tim Anglade is Head of Developer Programs for Apigee, the API company. In previous lives he was the CTO of a small startup, a grad. school lecturer, and an invited expert at the W3C.
